DR PHILIP MUNDA
ABOUT
Dr Philip Munda is a Specialist General Surgeon with extensive public-sector and academic training. He performs a wide range of general surgical procedures, with particular interests in hernia surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and endocrine surgery including thyroid and parathyroid operations. In addition to his focused interests, he manages trauma, acute care surgery, breast, colorectal, hepatobiliary and vascular conditions.
Known for his calm leadership and patient-centred approach, Dr Munda believes that clear communication and clinical excellence are central to optimal surgical outcomes. He is committed to delivering evidence-based care while ensuring that patients feel informed, supported, and confident throughout their surgical journey.
Born in Kenya and raised in Johannesburg, Dr Munda completed his MBChB at the University of Cape Town in 2015. He trained at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital before specialising through the University of the Witwatersrand. He qualified as a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa in 2025 and was awarded the Len Miller Prize for Clinical Excellence the same year. He also holds a Master of Medicine in General Surgery, with research focused on breast cancer and radiological pathological concordance.
Outside of medicine, Dr Munda is a passionate cook and was selected as a cast member on MasterChef South Africa in 2026 — reflecting the same precision, discipline, and dedication he brings to the operating theatre.
